Often we see a person, helpless, stuck in a situation, that he desperately wants to get out but he doesn’t.

All he does is complain, complain and complain. You can listen to them rant about it one or two times but if this happens again and again you start getting frustrated with that person quickly.

You think why in the world is he not doing something if he is so stuck? The answer may not be that simple.

However, one thing which stands true is that he can do something about it once he truly makes up his mind.

I have faced people like this in my lifetime too. They always seem to be grumbling about something or the other. Rarely do I see them giving solutions to it though.

It’s always easy to complain. Even harder is the will it takes to do something about it.

Here’s what Maya Angelou says about complaining:

Sister, there are people who went to sleep all over the world last night, poor and rich and white and black, but they will never wake again. Sister, those who expected to rise did not, their beds became their cooling boards, and their blankets became their winding sheets. And those dead folks would give anything, anything at all for just five minutes of this… So you watch yourself about complaining, Sister. What you’re supposed to do when you don’t like a thing is change it. If you can’t change it, change the way you think about it. Don’t complain.

I read this in James Clear newsletter.

Ask yourself a simple question?

Are you still alive?

If yes, then you can absolutely do something about the thing that is bothering you and about which you keep on complaining. If you can do something about it then just act and do it.

If you can’t do something about it then simply change your attitude or reaction towards it.

Problem solved.

Complaining is dangerous because the moment we go into that spiral we lose power over our agency to act. We signal the universe that this thing holds greater power over us.

People around us feel our helplessness and move away from us. See, no one has the energy to deal with a frequent complainer. Everyone is fighting their own battle, and if every one of those people starts to complain about their struggles then the whole world will be overrun by hordes of chronic complainers.

Don’t play the victim game.

I know it affords us some respite when we complain. Subconsciously, we do feel better sometimes after we complain. I feel it too. But come out of it before you get caught in that whirlpool. Trust me it will push you deep into an ocean of darkness.

Victim mentality only devoids us from seeing actual solutions to the problems that we are facing.

As Maya Angelou says above, unless you are dead, you can always do something about your problems. So stop complaining.

Even if you were dealt a losing hand in life, make the best use of it. Keep playing until you win the game.

Because sooner or later if you keep on trying to push ahead, you will see that there was no reason to complain in the first place.
